The Next Society – 20th November 2018

The week of November 19th and 23th, International Projects Area from ACCIÓ’s Cluster Unit presented the activity of Catalan clusters to a foreign cluster delegation. Several countries, such as Turkey, Tunis, Palestine, Morocco and Jordan, were represented by the delegation. This initiative is part of the European project The Netx Society.

FEMAC was one of the clusters selected to present its trajectories, development and especially, the strategy adopted in order to adapt to the current environment – whose characteristics carries on concordance with competitiveness and continuous change –.

Enric Pedrós, FEMAC’s Cluster Manager, presented the case study of FEMAC and moderated the debate between the visiting clusters, laying on the table different topics, such as actions and tools that boost competitive advantages and support the longevity of the cluster. Since the presentation carried out at FEMAC headquarters, seize the momentum to visit the installations of the Eurecat – the Technology Center of Catalonia –.

Afterwards, during the afternoon, the delegation visited two companies; Arcusin S.A and Biovert S.L – members of FEMAC –. Both companies explained their connection with FEMAC, synergies, support and cooperation originated.

Incoming Mission – 22th and 23th October 2018

The 23th of October, FEMAC in collaboration with ACCIÓ organized an inverse trade mission. On one hand, different distributors and importers originating from five different countries – Azerbaijan, Romania, Russia, Turkey and Peru – gathered together at FEMAC headquarters. On the other hand, several Catalan enterprises from different agricultural subsectors – mainly machinery, seeds, agritech… – had the opportunity to interact with the distributors during B2B meetings. The main objective of the dynamics was to build professional and commercial links.

The first two days were dedicated to meetings between importers and exporters. B2B meetings took place in Barcelona and in Lleida – the second day, so that, companies from different regions of Catalonia could participate. The last day, distributors could visit individually those enterprises most interested them.

Overall, participants made a positive appraisal of the initiative. In fact, a few participants showed interest in organizing individual visits once B2B meetings and activities had concluded in order to get know better the activity of the enterprise selected, specify aspects or see the product.

VII FEMAC Strategic Immersion – 26th and 27th July 2018

On July 26th and 27th, FEMAC celebrated the VII Strategic Immersion. The city of Girona was the selected place where the event took place. This time, participants and FEMAC’s team wanted to approach thorough a deep critical thinking exercise about “THE FUTURE FEMAC”. The members contemplated how the cluster should change, the strategic points to strengthen, the added valued to put in and how members – individually and collectively – could contribute to reach this new FEMAC.

About thirty participants attended FEMAC’s Strategic Immersion; most of them were enterprises members of the cluster and research institutions. This year, unlike previous editions, participation was greater since members come accompanied.

Inés Sagrario from the firm Competitiveness, moderate participative sessions, whom objective was to bring members and FEMAC’s team closer to the new approach the cluster will be working on from this point forward.

With the aim of learning from other clusters’ activity and acquire a new perspective as well as ideas to develop during the sessions already mentioned, the cluster invited Mr. Eduald Casas and Mr. Robert Mas from INNOVAC and CPW clusters, respectively. Both cluster managers share their experience, the management model, operating system and corporate culture of their clusters. To conclude the meeting, Casoperia Robotics team prepared a robotics competition, which revitalizes the atmosphere.

II International Conference on Agro Big Data – 12th July 2018

FEMAC Collaborated with the University of Lleida, and EUERECAT Reserach Center in organizing, the BigDSSAgro conference , devoted to decision support systems in agriculture, which combine models, databases and algorithms to support many real-world decision-making problems.

The access to cheap sensor technology, drones, climate data and forecasts, satellite information about soils, humidity and more is provoking a revolution with the irruption of Big Data and opening the door to the development and application of novel optimization and simulation models in Agriculture and the Agri-food industries.

The main question to solve is how to transform the huge amount of data into useful information to decision-makers. Current applications cover a wide range of different areas, from food production or animal welfare to sustainability or climate change impact; and they are expected to still increase in future. The scope of the conference includes findings on established andnew Operations Research, Big Data and Analytics methods ineffective decision-making applications in Agriculture and in the Agri-food industry, including their supply chain, and also problems in Forestry and in Environment studies.
