VII Strategic Training Week New York – From 5th to 9th November 2018

FEMAC participated together with another 15 Catalan clusters in the 7th edition of Strategic Training Week, organized by the Catalan Government Agency for Business Competitiveness (ACCIÓ). In this occasion, New York City was the new ecosystem to explore.

Clusters not only had the opportunity to attend strategy training sessions provided by renown professionals such as Ms Rita Guther McGrath – currently professor at Columbia University –, but they also could met with agents, entrepreneurs and people related to American business ecosystem – some of them successful Catalan managers settled in America, from where they were managing their business.

Enric Pedrós, the cluster manager of FEMAC, reached out diverse companies and managers during the trip – some of them might be strategically interesting for both FEMAC and its members. Strategic Training Week is a program coordinated by Catalonia Clusters and promoted by Catalan Government through the agency ACCIÓ, which seeks for strategic alliances, fosters competitiveness and introduces Catalan clusters’ activity internationally.

Beyond the activities already mentioned, the program included visits to multinational corporations. For instance, participants visited Google, Parsons The New School for Design, The World Bank and The Inter-America Development Bank (IDB) in Washington.

Incoming Mission – 22th and 23th October 2018

The 23th of October, FEMAC in collaboration with ACCIÓ organized an inverse trade mission. On one hand, different distributors and importers originating from five different countries – Azerbaijan, Romania, Russia, Turkey and Peru – gathered together at FEMAC headquarters. On the other hand, several Catalan enterprises from different agricultural subsectors – mainly machinery, seeds, agritech… – had the opportunity to interact with the distributors during B2B meetings. The main objective of the dynamics was to build professional and commercial links.

The first two days were dedicated to meetings between importers and exporters. B2B meetings took place in Barcelona and in Lleida – the second day, so that, companies from different regions of Catalonia could participate. The last day, distributors could visit individually those enterprises most interested them.

Overall, participants made a positive appraisal of the initiative. In fact, a few participants showed interest in organizing individual visits once B2B meetings and activities had concluded in order to get know better the activity of the enterprise selected, specify aspects or see the product.

II International Conference on Agro Big Data – 12th July 2018

FEMAC Collaborated with the University of Lleida, and EUERECAT Reserach Center in organizing, the BigDSSAgro conference , devoted to decision support systems in agriculture, which combine models, databases and algorithms to support many real-world decision-making problems.

The access to cheap sensor technology, drones, climate data and forecasts, satellite information about soils, humidity and more is provoking a revolution with the irruption of Big Data and opening the door to the development and application of novel optimization and simulation models in Agriculture and the Agri-food industries.

The main question to solve is how to transform the huge amount of data into useful information to decision-makers. Current applications cover a wide range of different areas, from food production or animal welfare to sustainability or climate change impact; and they are expected to still increase in future. The scope of the conference includes findings on established andnew Operations Research, Big Data and Analytics methods ineffective decision-making applications in Agriculture and in the Agri-food industry, including their supply chain, and also problems in Forestry and in Environment studies.
